[more on Jeff] Mark McConnel, 47, has a mountaineering pedigree that extends through his father, a European alpinist who’s playground included the Eiger, the Matterhorn (before fixed ropes), and Mount Blanc. Mark started climbing with his father at 11 and moved through a number of outdoor pursuits with him including competitive yacht racing for over 20 years. A little bruised by experience, including metal plates and screws in his leg from a climbing fall, he has developed a prudent and disciplined approach to mountaineering that successfully competes with “summit fever”. Currently residing in Roanoke, Virginia, Mark received a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from The University of Virginia and a Master of Architecture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. A community activist and recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the United Way, Mark has served on a number of public-service organizations including chair of the Roanoke Arts Commission and President of the Blue Ridge Mountaineering Association. Dwight Holland, an original member of the team, is unable to make the current climb, but will be supporting us from the home front. |
